Reflections for Chapters 3-5

 The purpose of this assignment is for you to be able to: • Clearly articulate the importance of each neurodevelopmental construct, its role on the developing brain, and its role in the school setting • Make personal reflections & connections with the content covered in the book. You will summarize your reactions to and understanding of “A Mind at a Time.” You will be responsible for reading chapters 1-9 and provide a reflective analysis related to each chapter. Below are guiding questions. For each chapter take a look at the guiding questions and compile a 1 to 2 paragraphs response that answers the questions. Your paragraphs should NOT be in a question-answer format but a well-developed response that is reflective. Full credit is based on (a) evidence that you have read the chapter; and (b) personal reaction/reflection/connection to the content of the chapter.
CHAPTER 3: Conducting a Mind: Our Attention Control System
Attention is a very complex concept that involves multiple factors. Overall, attention controls the mind as it assists our focus on what is important at any particular moment.
To successfully attend, we need “fuel” to attend, we need to choose the right information to attend to and be able to focus sufficiently on it, and we need to determine the best way to respond depending upon what we’ve learned through our attention.
Explain the importance of attention as the “conductor” of our brain. Why is it important for a teacher to be a careful observer of the diversity in children’s ability to attend? Provide some examples of the importance of attention in school.

CHAPTER 4: Remembering to Learn and Learning to Remember: Our Memory System
Nothing is ever learned without tapping into some component of memory. There are 3 types of memory: short-term memory (allows for very brief retention of about 2 seconds of new information), active working memory (the memory for temporarily holding in mind current activity, and long term memory (the warehouse for more or less permanent knowledge).
Explain the importance of memory as a function of the brain. Why is it important for a teacher to be a careful observer of the diversity in children’s ability to remember? What are some of the memory requirements in school?
CHAPTER 5: Ways with Words: Our Language System
Language and communication are essential in the everyday existence of children. The language system includes many types of usage including nonlinguistic communication, simple conversational language, academic/literate language, concrete language and abstract language.
Explain the importance of language as a function of the brain. Why is it important for a teacher to be a careful observer of the diversity in children’s ability to receive and express language/communication? Which subject areas of school demand the greatest language abilities?
