Edward Hopper

You will write a 4-8 page paper (double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font, 1-inch margins).
You are to describe in close detail everything in the image.
Pay close attention to nuances and subtleties of color and shading and rendering
In your description you should incorporate your observations of 1) his style, 2) his techniques of characterization and, 3) his techniques of suggestion; 4) you should explain the function or "purpose" of each and how each contributes to the image.
You should try to describe 1) the narrative content of the image and, 2) what you think he is "getting at," saying, suggesting.
You are to describe the organization of his imagery.
Remembering that everything in an image is part of its composition, when you discuss the organization be sure to discuss the compositional position of every significant object.
Conclude your discussion with your evaluation of the quality of his painting.
Use your own words. Do not use academic terminology or generalized labels such as "Realistic," "Impressionism" or "painterly,""bold." Do not borrow the sentences or phrases of professional writers. Remember that a discussion of quality is about much, much more than whether or not you "like"
the artist's work. Do not be subjective.
Do not use any historical content that one cannot perceive from the painting. For example, the background of the artist or the book. However, it is ok to include historical details through observation from the painting.
Remember also, you are to include two carefully finished diagrams of the image you're discussing: one from eye level, and a second from directly above. You may want to include these in your discussion of Composition.

Here are some suggestions to help you focus your note taking efficiently:
For this assignment concentrate only on Hopper's interior scenes: hotel rooms, domestic interiors, restaurants, offices etc.
The images you look at should include at least one person.
Using short descriptively clear detailed sentences, make notes on Hopper's technique.
How does he use color? texture? light and shadow? space & objects?
How does he organize his imagery?
How does he characterize people and objects?
How do you characterize his style?
