Research Paper Assignment
You will be writing a term paper on an Anatomy
and Physiology-related topic of your choice. The topic should aim to expand
your understanding of A & P, including why we study A & P and its
wide-ranging applications and involvements.
The
paper may be informative or persuasive, depending on your topic and the stance
you are taking toward it, as long as you can support all of your claims with
scientific references and studies. You will be required to include a minimum of 3 references overall. You
are free to use research articles from PubMed, and/or news articles including
those found in Nature News, BBC, or any major news broadcaster. References from
Wikipedia are discouraged unless you verify and cite their citations, and
references from blogs and forums are forbidden, as much of the information on
these forms of media is unfounded. For
your convenience 3 sample research papers on Prostate cancer have been provided
from PubMed.

Your paper should be thoughtful and well written, and should
strictly adhere to the following guidelines.
Printed copy of
the completed research
paper (typed in Times New Roman font size 12, double-spaced, 4 pages
limit) should be handed to your Instructor by the due date. Format of the term paper should resemble
that of a typical published research paper organized as follows:
Title
Author
Affiliation (CMCCD,
BI- 022)
Abstract (up
to 0.5 page) -
A concise summary of your research, purpose, results, interpretation, and
significance. This allows the reader to get an overall impression of the study
before reading the details. The abstract section is a brief synopsis of the
paper that captures all the relevant elements described in more detail in the
subsequent sections.
Introduction (up
to 0.5 page) –
·
Introduces
the topic in a clear and understandable manner, describes
generally accepted view on the topic.
·
Introduces
the relationship between A & P and the topic
·
Makes
clear the purpose of the paper (inform, prove an argument, propose a theory,
etc.)
·
Some background references may be
useful to place your research in proper perspective.
Methods and
Materials (up to 0.5 page) - Briefly explain the tools that people have used. Ideally,
this section provides the reader with enough information to duplicate your
research and verify your results - in short to carry out independent,
scientific validation of your study.
Results (up to
1 page) -
·
Covers
all aspects of the topic (clinical, societal, etc.)
·
If
you are proving an argument, include sufficient support of your argument
·
Makes
the necessary connections (leaves no unanswered questions/holes in the paper)
·
Addresses
any issues/controversies related to the topic
Discussion (up
to 0.5 pages) -
Interpret your results and compare them to previously published work. What factors
influenced your choice of the topic? Brings the paper to a close. Summarizes
your information/argument/theory. Makes a conclusion, speculates on future
directions
Literature
Cited (up to 0.5 pages)-
List in alphabetical order the references cited in the report. Each reference should
contain: Authors' names, publication date, title of article, book or chapter,
volume, and page numbers.
Some
things to consider when trying to choose a topic for your paper:
·
Is
A & P connected in any way to your major field of study?
·
Do
you have a family member with a disease that you would like to know more about
(i.e. diabetes, cancer, Down Syndrome, etc.)?
Grading will
be based on the following:
1. Overall
completeness: Full results and discussion sections.
2. Data
presentation: Are all data included, labeled and clearly presented?
3.
The paper should flow
well. If you are unsure if your paper does, read it aloud to someone.
Paragraph-paragraph transitions should be smooth and well thought out. Have
you related your findings to previous works in the literature?
4. Writing: Is it
your original work? Spelling, grammar, and sentence structure should be
correct
PLEASE NOTE: Because of the openness of
this assignment, it is impossible to give more precise specifications. If you
are unsure of something, please do not hesitate to ask questions.
