Your struggle of being on welfare.
I will assign you to a diverse role. You will then write a 2-4-page report, in first person (as if you are the person you have been assigned) using the following guidelines: You are an individual living on welfare
First. Research the role.
Find at least 2-3 sources to give you the required information.
Suggested places to start research:
Multicultural and gender studies database
LexisNexis http://www.lexisnexis.com.libproxy.txstate.edu/hottopics/Inacademic/
Library Catalogue
Google Scholar
Google Books

Then. Write a paper. Requirements:
1. 2-4 pages – use APA format - typed, double-spaced, 12-point font, 1 inch surrounding margins, title page, running head, in-text citations, reference page.
2. Minimum 2 sources (2-4 is likely what you’ll use) using APA format—Magazines, Books, Newspaper Articles, Internet Articles, etc.
a. Resources for using APA format (including title page) and for evaluating internet sources:
i. Pg. 94 of Guidebook: Sample Bibliographic Citations in APA format
ii. Purdue OWL: APA formatting guide: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/
3. Include an introductory paragraph that captures the reader’s attention and includes a complete thesis statement.
4. Include all of the following (using the research) in the body of your paper, numbering them as you answer them. (question 1-7)
a. A complete description of your diversity role (This first question is more of an introduction to your diversity role and should contain a thesis statement previewing your paper as its last sentence)
b. Describe a typical day for you (where you go, who you see etc.)
c. Describe where you work and what you do there (if no job, why not?)
d. What things are difficult for you every day?
e. How do other people treat you? Include specific examples
f. What questions do people have about you?
g. What are your favorite “things” (to do, to experience, etc.)?
5. As you respond to these items, include at least 3 of the multicultural terms included in Chapter 6 of the textbook (mindfulness, other-orientation- communication in which we focus on the needs and concerns of others while maintaining our personal integrity; achieved through the processes of socially decentering and being empathetic. stereotyping –to place a person or group of persons into an inflexible, all encompassing category. prejudice - a judgment of someone based on an assumption that you already know relevant facts or background information about the person, assuming similarity, assuming differences, assuming superiority, listening/asking questions, and adapting). BOLD these terms in your paper
6. End everything with a concluding paragraph that pulls everything together and reflects the introduction
7. After the conclusion write a reflection paragraph that discusses the consequences of NOT adapting communication to others. This paragraph should include a thoughtful discussion of the impact this assignment will have on your future choices and actions regarding intercultural communication. Include a thoughtful reflection paragraph after your conclusion. This should jump back to YOUR point of view, not your embodied role. See rubric on page 31.
SOME TIPS:
Write in 1st person—i.e., “My morning is much like everyone else’s…”
Feel free to be creative and create a completely new character with a unique name, job, lifestyle, etc.
Edit your final draft for grammar and punctuation errors. At LEAST hit spell check.
In addition, I will check your Originality report- the Similarity Index must be less than 20%, otherwise, you will receive a zero for the assignment.
Guidebook Page Numbers:
• pp. 27-28: Full Description of Assignment
• p. 31: Grading Rubric that you must turn in to me BLANK
• pp. 33-46: Sample diversity board papers (your papers should look and sound like these!)
